NaMATA and MMU Forge Strategic Partnership for Public Transport Research and Innovation

The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) and Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing research, training, and innovation in the public transport sector. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two institutions will collaborate to drive knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and infrastructure development in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.

NaMATA, is tasked with overseeing the development of an efficient, safe, and sustainable public transport system across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Murang’a counties. On the other hand, MMU is a leading institution in Kenya dedicated to advancing research, science, and technology.

The MoU sets the framework for joint initiatives in key areas such as:

  • Training and mentorship programs for MMU students and NaMATA staff.
  • Collaborative exhibitions, conferences, and career days.
  • Data-driven research projects to enhance public transport efficiency.
  • Innovations aimed at improving urban mobility.
  • The establishment of a Public Transport Resource Centre at MMU.

One of the major highlights of the agreement is the commitment to conducting research that informs transport policy and planning. The collaboration will enable both institutions to collect and analyze critical data on public transport systems, helping to shape more sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions.

Additionally, MMU will work with NaMATA to develop a comprehensive transport curriculum that includes subjects such as transport governance, land-use planning, road safety, and non-motorized transport systems. This initiative aims to equip students with practical knowledge that aligns with real-world transport challenges.

The MoU also provides MMU students with unique opportunities for hands-on learning through internships and attachments with NaMATA. This experiential learning approach will allow students to gain insights into public transport management, policymaking, and infrastructure development.

The planned Public Transport Resource Centre will further support students and researchers by offering access to valuable publications, reports, and digital materials related to transport and urban mobility.

Both NaMATA and MMU have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable transport solutions. Their joint research efforts will contribute to the development of a more accessible, efficient, and safe transport system in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.

While the MoU is not legally binding, it represents a strong commitment from both institutions to work together toward a shared vision of better public transport services. The agreement will run for three years, with provisions for renewal and modifications based on mutual consent.

The collaboration between NaMATA and MMU marks a significant step toward bridging the gap between academia and public transport policy implementation. By fostering research, training, and innovation, this partnership is poised to make meaningful contributions to Kenya’s urban transport sector, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient system for all.
